PAUL VAN DYK - IN BETWEEN (MUTE) |
| |

It may take more than one spin to appreciate Paul van Dyk's new "In Between" CD. Ultimately it presents itself as sort of a subtle-more-than-sublime variant of epic/melodic trance. The disc starts off with poppier material that has decent hooks and could run a dance floor but lacks the high octane to really rev things up. Of course, this is just the lead in. Paul van Dyk has structured a progressive album here (by no means are any of these tracks to be analyzed in a vacuum), with each song having its place in the buildup. We can forgive the enthusiasm not generated right up front. This is a momentum building dance experience and van Dyk understandably isn't jumping in on the high. The listener is carried through a mix of vocal and instrumental trance endeavors and midway through the epic vibe starts to come through, though it never quite brings the uplift over the top. We feel good as we listen though we fall short of euphoria. Relax and let the music take over and van Dyk's artistic intent starts to come through, even if it feels like he's pulling his punches just a bit. "In Between" is a good, but not great, CD that would make a solid starter disc for a night of trance and dance.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
