Paul Oakenfold's "Greatest Hits & Remixes" is simultaneously an eclectic, broad-in-scope release and one that is streamlined and driven. A multiplicity of styles inform the trance-based batch of dance songs here. Hip-hop, pop, rock, alternative and more converge on the melody and beats bouncing throughout this CD. At heart is Oakenfold's mastery of trance DJing. But what this disc also demonstrates is his power to pick great numbers to convert into dance music. And there's so many influences at work here, this isn't strictly trance, even if that's the base. But the impressive amount of styles gather here doesn't add up to clutter. Oakenfold smartly keeps it all in line; this is his set and he's in control. The diversity helps keep things interesting. There's not much chance of the listener being swept under by a stretch of songs that sound like one long track. Oakenfold is a demigod of dance music and with this release, it's not hard to see why.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
