ARABIC GROOVE (PUTUMAYO)
|
| |

"Arabic Groove" should certainly be ranked among the chief releases by world label Putumayo (gracing the ears of Romancing the Stone customers everywhere!). It's one of the sturdiest examples of what this label does - it's Putumayo near its peak, doing what Putumayo does best. The exotic mystery of the Middle East and North Africa comes alive, flowering in the grateful souls of world music fans. These modern mergings of organic and electric snap up the listener's attention with master manipulations of dance grooves while ensuring the robustness of the sound with heady traditional non-electronic elements. And just as organic and electronic meet in an explosion of ear-pleasing and body-inspiring power, so do past and present join in balance and harmony. The edge of today is, of course, represented by the electronic dance propulsion while ancient musical tradition comes alive through the melodies and singing rooted in the culture of this region. Dance music is rescued from its doldrums (created by watered down and diluted techno bins in music stores everywhere) with this infusion of truly classic musical flavors, who themselves find refreshed importance in this combination. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
