CHAOS RESTORED WITH JUSTIN MARTIN (BUZZIN' FLY RECORDS)

OK. I've reviewed house before. I try to be objective and take into consideration a target audience's tastes as well as my own. But many of my readers know I don't care for house that much. Personally, it's just not my thing. But I have to hand a fistful of kudos to Justin Martin; he's compiled and mixed a compelling batch of tracks here that overcome much of my prejudice against house music. It is minimalist in some ways and bears plenty of house's repetition. This is minimalism that works, rather than boring lack of musical development. The repeating grooves here, along with other elements, help create an absorbing atmosphere. There's a spacey aura here (that's not actually spacey - this isn't space music) that helps much. There's also just a bit of electro in the mix in spots, and that's not a bad thing, either. I can't entirely put my finger on it, but Martin has really done something right here and earned more interest on my part than house can generally manage. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
