JOE RANSOM - FABRICLIVE 20 (FABRIC) |
| |

The Burbank skaters that aren’t listening to trust fund punk sustain themselves on a diet of hip-hop and fast food. Joe Ransom probably had his British parallel, substituting a Big Mac for Bristol-bought curry fries, of course. With a background in skateboard and hip-hop culture, Ransom’s forays into Bristol have definitely seen the city’s enormous musical influence rub off on him. That same afro-eclectic hook that propelled acts like Massive Attack and Roni Size permeates Ransom’s bad ass selection of hip-hop and breaks. Tribal chants from M.I.A.’s “Galang” drop neatly into the smooth Dynamite M.C. vocals on the Stanton Warriors remix of the Nextmen’s “High Score.” There are plenty of nice changeups like that throughout this tight mix, which starts playfully but manages a growing intensity with stuff ranging from Rodney P and Roots Manuva’s vocals on Ty’s “So You Want Some” through to slick tech-tinged breaks by kings like Tayo and Rennie Pilgrem. Fabric has released a few jungle and breaks mixes lately, but Ransom’s FabricLive doesn’t feel like it’s crowding the CDs by the Freestylers or Andy C & Hype. If anything, Ransom’s effort further demonstrates how broad, popular and fucking great break beats are right now. – www.fabriclondon.com-- review by Yuri Wuensch
