COBBLESTONE JAZZ - 23 SECONDS (!K7) |
| |

The name of this artist left me a bit perplexed at first. Cobblestone Jazz. Hmmm (scratches chin). So I'm thinking electronica meets the sounds of jazz. And then minimalist house hits my ears? I was a bit surprised. But slowly it sank into my thick skull. On the surface, you can't pounce on this and readily find "the sounds of jazz." That's because the reference to jazz here is more one of personality than one of strict instrumentation. Sure you could find stuff here to make more conventional jazz out of but that's not the point. What is the point is the spirit of jazz that trips along the minimalism of this 2-disc set with its nighttime grooves and snappy personality. Jazz traditionalists need not be caught off-guard by the name (as long as they've read my review, anyway). The more subtle and, one could argue, sublime, aspects of this release may catch the jazz-head thinking, "This sounds familiar..."
