ROLAND KLINKENBERG - MEXICO CAN WAIT (GLOBAL UNDERGROUND) |
| |

"Mexico Can Wait" seems more concerned with mood than with dancing (though it's got grooves one could dance to, to be sure). This eclectic batch of tracks seems quite focused on offering melodic soundscapes with a penchant for ethereal mood that stand as the backdrop for the songs' beat patterns. The music does possess energy but not the aggressive shake-the-dancehall stuff of some electronica. There is a reserve and gentleness to the proceedings that put me more in mind with chilling out that moving around, though this is by no means chillout. I do wonder if the music is perhaps just a tad too reserved, as if maybe it's holding itself back. Not that it should be faster, necessarily, but it hits me as beautiful but not quite compelling. The context in which you listen will have much to do with your reaction to the music (are you driving, relaxing, hanging out at a club?). These tunes combine lushness and a certain airy minimalist inclination (without actually embracing minimalism). The hooks could be more, uh, hooky but it certainly doesn't drop the listener's attention, either. The warm sounds on "Mexico Can Wait" slip in quietly and non-aggressively sink you in to the sounds.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
