It may surprise you, but Israel is actually the source of a growing music scene. And I'm not just referring to traditional sort of Eastern you music you might have in mind. Hell, Israel has a burgeoning metal and rock scene. But that's not what we're discussing here. What we are discussing is a scene of music that blends that blends the musical cultural heritage of the nation of Israel with modern pop and pop jazz. Israel is indeed ancient and has strong ties to the past. It's whole sociology is tied up in respect and devotion to its roots. But we shouldn't let that fool us into thinking that it's merely a backward, superstitious country of religious zealotry. That kind of thing makes news. Violence and religious warring makes news. But good news isn't news, to paraphrase an old journalism adage. Unless you're looking for colorful music from abroad to brighten your CD collection. If that's the case, then I have news for you. Contemporary considerations, generous doses of accessible jazz tinting and an organic grounding in the folk flavors of Israel all go into the recipe behind Putumayo's new release.
