STEVEN GARCIA - FUNK YOU VERY MUCH (HOUSE CAFÉ MUSIC) |
| |

Though Steven Garcia has his roots in the New York house scene (calling DJs
and producers like Joe Claussel, Joeski and Onionz peers), it‚s apt that
he‚d release his debut album on Spain‚s House Café Music. You‚d hardly be
surprised to hear these tunes drifting out from a sun-drenched Ibiza cantina
with tunes like „Special Sauce‰ evoking that subtle Balearic vibe thanks to
the light piano melody. The track listing admittedly confused me in some
places, however. Denoted as „having rhymes on top of a classic hip-hop
soundtrack,‰ the second track, „Ghetto Blasters,‰ is devoid of any lyrics ˆ
but any MC so inclined would have a wonderfully low-key bit of breaks to do
it on. More simmering is „Natural High‰ with some tight yet light break
beats, hand drums and bass and he wends back into that patio sound on
„Island Hopping‰ and the delicate guitars on „Smooth.‰ Sundown or sunup
house might be the best way to describe Garcia‚s material and DJs looking to
stock their boxes for summertime stuff would do well to play any of the
tunes from Funk You Very Much. Backyard funk and downtempo dogs looking for
a complement to their Café Del Mar discs may just put on this CD while
sipping a few cold ones.-- review by Yuri Wuensch
