TRAVIS SULLIVAN'S BJORKESTRA - ENJOY! (KOCH)

Bjork is indisputably a quirky art pop creator. It's both a quirky and not-so-quirky idea to transform her music by re-imagining it for jazz orchestra. Quirky because it seems a startling leap to make. Not so quirky because experimentation is a core aspect of Bjork's music. And, then, quirky again because seeing such a post-modern artist brought round to more traditional forms of expression is a curious thing indeed. I think jazz was probably the ideal mode if one was going to reinvent Bjork in an old school music form. Of course, these songs come of as nothing like dull elevator jazz or anything like that. Bjork's provocative lyrics and sparklingly weird song constructs filtered through very classy and classic music is a sublime convergence of ideas and a marvelous bit of inspiration. Surprising, shocking and satisfying, Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra project finds a perkiness you might not expect from the frequently ethereal Bjork. Of course, then there's "Army of Me," which finds itself manifested through plugged-in jazz rock. But whichever song you hear first, whether playing it straight through from beginning to end or skipping around, there's little chance you won't be impressed.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
