JAZZY JEFF - IN THE HOUSE
(DEFECTED) |
| |

My hometown was never really hood enough for Jazzy Jeff during the late ‘80s. We were always more a Vanilla Ice kind of city. As such, I missed out on the phenomenon that he and Will Smith were. My only lasting of memory of Jeff from that period was him getting tossed out of the mansion by Uncle Phil. From then till now, Jeff’s made the move from hip hop to house showing up on the cream of the crop, Defected’s In the House series (vying for my favourite series alongside Fabric’s line of mixes). So, how does Jeffrey A. Townes shape up as a house DJ? Well, his selections are superb. Look for tunes by Soldiers of Twilight, Kenny Dope, Kool and the Gang, Julie McKnight, the late Barry White and Defected’s own DJ Gregory with “Tropical Soundclash.” Technically, while it’s well mixed, there’s sometimes an inconsistency between house’s long luxuriating seamlessness and hip hop’s drop the break, four-bar style of quickness – you get a bit of both styles here. However, the transitions are never jarring and if you’re looking for a collection of old meets new, Jeff’s In the House 3 CD box set boasts a pretty inspired track listing. www.djjazzyjeff.com - www.defected.com-- review by Yuri Wuensch
