PENDULUM - IN SILICO (EAR STORM/ATLANTIC) |
| |

Pendulum is an ideal for a name that has me swinging back and forth between yea and nay. In the end, I think the nay isn't that strong, but neither is the yea. I wasn't hooked in or blown away by any signs of dazzling originality, but I did find myself sinking in to a general catchiness on Pendulum's part. "In Silico" is a fairly mainstream (so far as this sort of thing is mainstream) serving of pop rock meets dance. It's got some nods to the likes of Crystal Method with the acid buzz and big beat feel at times. But it also culls a bit from radio-friendly rock touches. Sometimes it's vocally inclined, but not always. When it is, the vocals do seem an afterthought - not so uncommon in the dance/electronica world. Of course, this breakbeaty music isn't strictly electronica. There's plenty of guitar to go around, and I'll admit it's streamlined pretty nicely with the electronic grooves. The production is fairly teflon, though it isn't lacking in textures. (Crystal Method has more edge - but please don't get confused by my second comparison to CM - Pendulum doesn't sound like them even though I am passingly reminded of the maestros behind the now-classic "Vegas.") Pendulum's dance rock vibe isn't enlightening but it is energetic and has got some verve and enough hooks to keep your finger away from the stop button for a while. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
