JOHNNY CASH REMIXED |
| |

I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. Johnny is the man. How that happened being that I generally avoid country music like the plague... no idea. Maybe some early childhood experience scarred me that way. So it was with great trepidation and curiosity that I pressed play on this disc of remixes. Snoop Dogg QDT Muzic Remix of the classic "I Walk The Line". Ok, I respect Snoop. I do. And I respect that it sounds like he respected Johnny. But, it didn't sound a bit like he "gets" Johnny, at least not the way I do, or the way the 2nd remixer, Count De Money does. Now, I have no idea who Count is, but his swingin take on "Big River" had me nodding and tapping my cowgirl boots. Sadly, this was not to last. Philip, I gotta tell you, Johnny doesn't do well when looped like that over synthetic drums and synths. Now I don't want to give everything away, suffice to say that there's both good and not so good on this CD. Given how high the bar was set by the originals, that's a huge compliment to the artists that put their spins on these timeless classics. It hurts me so to give Mr. Cash anything less than a full five stars, but since I have mixed feelings about enough of these reworkings, I'm just going to have to settle on a midway three and half. Sorry Johnny!-- review by Claire Maxwell
