BOOKA SHADE - THE SUN AND THE NEON LIGHT (GET PHYSICAL)

Dark but not foreboding, Booka Shade does some line-blurring. Centered in house but with mid- and downtempo moments and atmosphere to spare, "The Sun & The Neon Light" roots itself in electronica but also unfolds sounds in different places that call to mind such instruments as keyboard, piano and guitar (though I have no idea if they are synthetically generated or not). Hints of electro stimulate the proceedings, as do touches of new wave and (non-aggressive) electro-industrial. Personality flows from every drop of melody, every bump of beat, every shred of texture. One feels instantly at home in the allure of Booka Shade's sound. Without slipping into pigeonhole confines of mainstream electronica but also without falling to the fringe wayside, Booka Shade has made something original but friendly (even if in the shadows).-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
