The first new album in 8 years (and my first exposure to this brilliant band) is hands-down the strongest world music release I've heard in some time. And this isn't world music like generic comp for cheap bin CDs are - this is pure, brilliant world music. Hailed by music people the world over (including Mick Jagger), this band brings the exotic alive with a whole passel of distinctive instruments - from reedy woodwinds (are they woodwinds? I can only guess) to mystic-sounding stringed things. The sands of the desert and the fire of enlightenment infuse you as this penetrates your psyche, soul and everything else. Piercing but strangely mesmerizing and transcendental instrumentals and vocal hypnotism call to mind another world and even another time. It's a bit alien to us up-to-date Westerners but it's wisdom as music, a taste of something bigger and more profound than you could ever hope to find on the radio (unless you know which public access show to listen to, and even then, I'm not sure ...).-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
