The Revolution Present "Revolution" (Rapster Rec.) |
| |

It took me a second listen to get it - but I got it. And that's what counts. This CD is the hub at the center of a wheel whose spokes are the converging, disparate influences that make up the palette of styles forming this rich, sassy food for your ears. A confident mix of pop, dancefloor and traditional Cuban music, "Revolution" generates its energy sort of like making fire by rubbing sticks together - only this has considerably more finesse! The surprising juxtaposition of ideas is the heat-making crux where the various flavors rub together to ignite the power of this music. From distinctly south-of-the-U.S. melodies and zesty vocal work to the hot dance hooks, Revolution keeps a new thing coming along on every track. No laurel resting here. Cuban jazz, straight up pop, a dash of hip-hop, a mix of organic with the electronica, not to mention plenty of beats (and even mellow interlude tunage around the midway point) - well, it makes for an intelligent exploration of Cuban musical culture from past to present, all at once.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
