CATZ 'N DOGZ - STARS OF ZOO MOTHERSHIP MUSIC

After a shaky start, the (possibly) inexplicably named "Stars of Zoo" shapes itself into an impressive debut - of sorts. Now, let me explain. First, the name is possibly inexplicable because there's an outside chance it makes sense at first blush (there may be an explanation somewhere I'm not aware of). Maybe the animal theme is pointing to jungle-y stuff (not the genre), from there turning one's thoughts to tribal stuff. Because there are some tribal style grooves herein, though that's not all you'll find. This dark house music from Catz 'N Dogz pulls you from horror-movie sounding melodies through tribal rhythms to erotic, huffing dance music and minimalist mood-making. Call it textures on parade. (If I've ever said that before, forgive me. Or not. Your choice.) Though wary at first due to an early track that failed to snag my confidence, Catz 'N Dogz is a payoff in the end. (And the other thing I was going to explain: "impressive debut - of sorts" ... duo Grzegorz and Wojchiech aka Greg and Voitek aren't newbies - previously you heard them as 3 Channels.) -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
