GUY J - ESPERANZA (BEDROCK)

"Esperanza" is a wide-open sky with few but beautiful clouds stretched across an expanse of gorgeous desert horizon-making. It's an oasis of breathing beauty. The beauty is ambientesque techno melodies. The breathing - well, that's the groove arising from the intentionally shy beats. While semi-minimalist like the Fabric house work I'm constantly drooling over and praising (ah, effusiveness), Guy J's CD is otherwise the polar opposite. It's textures don't buzz, they float. It doesn't smash hard, it thrums gently. House has its heavy, heady sight. This is its wispy side. (Wispy doesn't mean empty and blown easily away by the wind ... this IS the wind ... think of it as a melodious breeze.) All the ambience of ambient (hardy har har) with a sleepy take on the dance pulse (it's got pace but not aggro-whumpiness), "Esperanza" is happy warm haze ambodied as structured sound. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
