"HOSPITALITY PRESENTS THIS IS DRUM & BASS" MIXED BY HIGH CONTRAST AND LONDON ELEKTRICITY |
| |

Hospitality's 2-disc drum-n-bass comp gives a little bit different spin than what I'm used to in this arena. A bunch of this is a more poppy Euro style (at least that's what an even more knowledgeable electronica-head told me - I'm trusting him since he's the fellow who got me into electronica to begin with). At any rate, yea, it is a bit poppier, but that doesn't detract. Sure it doesn't have that dark drive that Dara and Dieselboy have, but it still has so much of the groove. And the melodiousness is a bonus, anyway. While I like the spartan shadows and textures of the likes of Dara (Dieselboy is just too grungy), I also appreciate the prettier aspect to these two CDs. (Know this: I cut my teeth as an electronica fan on melodic trance.) I'm glad this compilation from two capable DJs has given me the chance to expand my horizons in a genre I love. And, just for the record, it's not all poppy. It has its curious detours along the way. The textures are sharp and seductive, the melodies (as has been stated) are alluring, the hooks are all over the place and the versatility is in place to keep this an interesting ride.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
