JIM RIVERS "NUBREED 7" (GLOBAL UNDERGROUND)

Moody, mellow house saturates the realm of sound across a 2-CD stretch with Jim Rivers "Nubreed" mix-it-up. Each disc is pumped full of tracks; Rivers isn't afraid to slip in short pieces for segue purposes. It's noteworthy the voluminous textures through which the listener is floated on this nocturnally flavored atmospheric exercise. Rivers spins a commendable collection of artists' work into his sonic tapestry, using some for extended groove feasts, others for doorways between longer pieces. The end result is a rich feast of flavors. Even just one of these discs allows Rivers to play and dabble and cull and pull together bit after bit into a whole that is smooth, not patchwork. The flow is never compromised even while Rivers meshes together element after element from what is obviously a formidable collection of records. Rivers must have at his fingertips a set of house records to make danceheads green with envy, and he knows how to use the resources at hand. Also worth mention is how "Nubreed 7" finds its hooks through wooing rather than pounding; in the context of my recent listening, this is a less aggressive release than some of the hard-hitting house I've put to my ears lately. Rivers doesn't beat you into submission; instead, he seduces you, entrances you, lulls you into a place of layers and auras, keeping you caught in his hypno-spiral until the last track fades and you shake it off ... -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
