KOMODO "STILL LIFE" (5 POINTS RECORDS) |
| |

Digging into the concept of how non-musical mediums - visuals, weather, etc. - can be conceptual bounce-off material for music, Komodo presents "Still Life." It's experimental without sounding experimental, though that does lie outside the dancehall mainstream. Along with the CD (each track is "Concept this number" or "Concept that number") is a booklet of photos, each corresponding to a track on the CD. It's a merging of media as music and images interact to create atmosphere. Of course, the music alone is worth it. Mid- and down-tempo beats take us across a variety of musical approaches, all of which boast Komodo's chi. From danceable but cerebral tracks to out-and-out ambient, "Still Life" is an open-sounding twilight of aural auras, an exercise in mood(s). The visual tie-in brings a new dimension to it, and it makes perfect sense. I know any number of times my association of CD cover art with the music itself has contributed to mental imagery and emotive responses. Komodo (Emmy-nominated Chris Child, with TV, movie and video game credits) is simply being proactive and deliberately fine-tuning this inclination of the musical mind's merging with visual accompaniment. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
