DARUDE "LABEL THIS!" (ROBBINS) |
| |

Darude's new collection of poppy trance is a real pounder. The beats drive hard and fast, like maybe they're thrilling along the Audubon. Uber-club friendly and mondo high-energy, not to mention continuously mixed, "Label This!" is a pretty good way to have an electronica throw-down if your neighbors are deaf or don't mind the noise. The only slightest quibble I can find here is that sometimes the grooves seem to overwhelm - just slightly - the melodies. If the pretty parts could hit just a tad harder, hit as viscerally as the beats, this would be pretty damn perfect for a mainstream dance album. As it is, the melodies are still tight, lush, catchy and reflect some of the uplift of epic trance. Darude keeps a populist approach to the album - it has its club candy moments, but never is it anywhere cloying. I've heard Darude derided for being too mainstream, but such complaints smack of groundless hating. There's nothing to hate here, and much to love. It's not full blown epic trance but neither is it shameless club junk - not by a long shot. This is a straight, heavy shot of centerline dance music with a pumping fist around your heart and a finger in the sky. Seriously, what's not to like? -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
