THE JAPANESE POPSTARS "WE JUST ARE" (GUNG-HO RECORDINGS) |
| |

I'll confess to some trepidation about this CD. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the name of the band. You know, it seemed self-consciously clever, satirical in a ... pop culture kind of way. Whatever. Now I know the name means great dance music that doesn't tumble right into one set category. The momentum does take a little time to build, I'll admit. It doesn't come right out with dangerous hooks. But by the time you realize you are hooked, it'll be too late to do anything about it. You won't want this to end. The Japanese Popstars keep the obsessive-compulsive critic guessing. Ha! Try describing this with a ready-made categorical shelving. The soft, vibrant melodies of today's gentler, more sweetly transcendent trance. The smooth textural appeal of house. The friendly, happy grooves of club stylings. Man, this is simply great dance music. If the record store nearest you has an electronica bin divided by subgenre tabs, tell 'em to just toss this one in the rack and see where it lands.-- review by K
