EAT STATIC "BACK TO EARTH" (INTERCHILL)

This is quite a smorgasbord of deliciousness! Regardless of where the aural charms of this CD wanders, it's always Eat Static. Not that I've ever heard them before (not that I remember), but the brilliance behind this music is ever present, be it acidy breaks, unelectric-meets-electronica, downtempo, jazztronic hypnosis, dub or ... or whatever! Eat Static, which apparently has been a force in genuine LIVE techno for more than a decade, has just now found me (thank God!) by way of this Interchill release. The band has appeared on comps for the label before, but here they get room to set out and explore. It's a masterful and expansive treat that spans a rainbow from almost purely electronic tracks (be it minimalist house, downtempo grooves mixed with ambient or whatever) to flesh meets computer by way of post-modern world music. (You like Spanish-flavored music or do you prefer a little Eastern mysticism? It doesn't matter, you get both!) I love being impressed and surprised and boy did Eat Static spark some serious love! Five big fat stars! -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
