PUTUMAYO PRESENTS RHYTHM & BLUES

One of Putumayo's best yet! Wholesomely organic, this one, like with other recent releases from the label, veers away from the old-new fusion of electronic with tradition, opting instead to go with a heavily traditional lean, which is just fine. Really, this is still more modern than some of the deep, old, old world traditions that Putumayo has ventured into on other releases given that R&B as we know it is a newer realm. But its presence here should amply demonstrate that it is a firm tradition and that we shouldn't forget our own backyard when considering the concept of "world music." Instantly likable and immediately demanding of repeat listening, "Rhythm & Blues" is a saucy, smoky, soulful bag of beautifully emotional loves and laments right from the heart of a whole bevy of passionate performers purveying profound sounds. The tunes are rich and engaging and reach right inside to take hold of you in a direct, vibrant way. "Rhythm & Blues" is exactly what it says it is, but it's not some rehash of tunes you've heard a bazillion times nor is it a second rate bargain bin cheap disc knock-off. This is top shelf, first-rate R&B artistry.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
