J ROGERS "ACCESS" (BLIPSWITCH DIGITAL)

J Rogers' Blipswitch Digital release "Access", while not fitting squarely into one genre slot, nevertheless will find fans among the tech-house crew. It kicks off with something a little downtempo from house pacing but slides into an overall arc of minimalist, techy, moody house pulsing. The edges aren't very rounded - this slick music has corners. Spartan, sci-kick textures gel into minimal but mighty atmosphere and drive, sinking robot hooks into the listener. Embracing the sparseness of vintage acid house but using that ambience-filled space to print out technical, cyborg grooves (without any future/sci-fi twankiness), "Access" is uber-modern but you can see the heritage from whence it was built. Not eschewing traditional house but not stepping back there either, J Rogers' latest release is spot on now music (with lasting quality), heavy tech but not bombastic, textured and captivating, a synthetic drug for house addicts.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
