"WORLD CHRISTMAS PARTY" VARIOUS ARTISTS (PUTUMAYO) |
| |

And I think to myself, what a wonderful World (Christmas Party, that is)! While Louis Armstrong does not, in fact, appear on this album (nor does the above-referenced song), there are plenty of familiar tunes on board this holiday party ship - and maybe a few you haven't heard. But the ones you have heard you probably haven't heard like this. Putumayo's presence as the label responsible naturally means that we're on a global journey musically. I'm not a huge fan of Christmas tunes, but digging along to this CD, I was getting the whole Christmas tune spirit of the thing and even pondering to myself the feasibility of keeping this in year-round circulation. At any rate, there's some fresh world-tunage spins on vintage Christmas music - with a considerable emphasis on the jazzy side of things, though that's not the only style here. A single-minded focus on one variety of music would be against the Putumayo spirit of dipping from a smorgasbord of all-around-the-planet musical flavors. Some discs cast a wider net than others. This one's net isn't so wide, but the representations of Christmas music is spot-on and catchy all the way through. Not to mention the fact that jazz is a brilliant partner with Christmas music. On another tangent from this most tangential of music critics (not really complimenting myself, per se, in case vocabulary beyond the monosyllabic throws you off - no offense), I have to cite my happiness at discovering that a lovely, groovy version of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" appears here; I was also pleased at a reggae take on "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." Hell, I'm pleased all the way around! I bumped this one to a four-point-five because it was already four star material, but its ability to make me click along to Christmas music gives it an extra oomph of musical yippee-yay-yo-kayay power!!!-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
