BROKENCYDE "WILL NEVER DIE" (BREAK SILENCE)

BrokeNcyde, from what I understand, catch a lot of flack. I can see why. Which isn't to say I'M giving them flack. Just noting that (a) they get flack and (b) I understand why they get flack. If you don't understand things like subtext and irony, then - chances are - you're not going to like much about BrokeNcyde, unless you really like psychotic hip-hop and feel able to ignore the trashy (yet clever) lyrics, the in-your-grille attitude, its raving testosterone hip-hop shove-i-ness so as to be able to enjoy the musical aspect of BrokeNcyde. Somehow, though, I kinda don't buy that theory. Seems to me that BrokeNcyde is sort of the thing you have to embrace - even if lightly (such as is the case with myself) - to appreciate. The cover art seems apropos given the high-tech junkyard mash-up of hardcore, techno and hip-hop. Ragingly energetic with lots of blood pumping through the BrokeNcyde middle finger, "Will Never Die" is, admittedly, a bit of an overwhelming experience, and one you may have to sink into bit by sampled bit. Two songs, three songs, four songs. Ease into it - hardly the attitude one would expect to take toward a band such as BrokeNcyde, yet it feels right if you consider the double entendre of the first three words of this sentence. In that case, it would mesh up greatly with the vulgar punky glam it up sleek sleaze blast of "Will Never Die." It's a loud aggressive thing, the melodies twisted into crunk phreaked out hip-hop electronic twang that slap you around while the vox - which range from purposefully overproduced melodo-robo-cized swagger vocals to flattened, sharp, screechy, teethraking tronned out hardcore - roll you in the dirt and kick you with the heels. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
