LUKE SOLOMON "THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE" (REKIDS) |
| |

Ah! Versatility! You can never go wrong with versatility. Unless, of course, it's entirely accidental or you don't know what the heck you're doing and just toss everything together (with the kitchen sink) all pell-mell with no artistic sensibilities. Then it's just a big mess. But such is hardly the case here. Luke Solomon brings out a special flavor for each and every beloved track on the marvelous "The Difference Engine." John Deere can say what they want about how well their machines run but they'd be hard-pressed to top out the smooth running of this engine. Ranging from tongue-in-cheek techno subversion to jazzness to minimalist mood, Solomon capably navigates the world of indie house and does so with vatsful of verve, I can tell you. Soulful and retro-future, "The Difference Engine" is one-uh da best housems to come along in 2010.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
