WUMPSCUT - EVOKE (METROPOLIS) |
| |

Even for an odd bird like Wumpscut, "Maiden" is a
weird piece. Moving back and forth between female
vocals and Rudy Ratzinger's gruff vox, the song and
its stilted rhythm - aligned with cleaner instrumental
work than I'm accustomed to with Wumpscut - is a bit
of an eyebrow raiser. At first disinclined to like it,
it's a persistent track and had me hooked into its
structure before all was said and done. The title
track is another example of Ratzinger's
experimentation on display on this album. Again, you
have far less distorted instrumentals behind the still
traditional (a la Wumpscut) vocal approach: lasery
beats shoot out, mingled with an echoing melody line
that conjures the stark beauty of space. "Tomb" merges
more classic Wumpscut (except for the noticeable lack
of strong distortion) with some skittery beats and
melodies suggestive of ambience and subtlety.
"Breathe" injects some fast pacing into Wumpscut's
electro-industrial - along with some weird, warbled
and echoed voice de kiddy. Still on display is the
move toward crisper electronica. The 11 tracks (and 2
remixes) on tap here will introduce the world to a new
Wumpscut (though the darkness remains ... fear not).-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
