MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE - YOU'LL REBEL TO ANYTHING (METROPOLIS) |
| |

I tried to decide if this new Mindless Self Indulgence
album is better, or worse, than what came before. The
final conclusion: It's different. The "Frankenstein
Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy" sounds of MSI were
certainly more raw and spastic than what's in evidence
here on You'll Rebel to Anything. Yet that was part
of the appeal. The fuck-you, in-your-faceness of
"FGWSSS" was pumped up with knuckle sandwich brashness
that perfectly fit the band's gonna-shock-you ethic.
However, the new stuff benefits from more polished
production, fuller bodied instrumentation and a
stronger industrial personality. Of course, at no
times is MSI's core being absent; it's simply renewed,
reinvigorated. Like I said, it's different. There's a
time to jam to the middle-finger anthems on "FGWSSS"
and its spartan, rambunctious electronic-tinged
punkishness and there's a time to rock out to the
unique, lush badassness fueling "YRTA" (which features
a maddeningly jacked up - and way cool - cover of
Rush's "Tom Sawyer"). And, hey, they're still vulgar.
But if you don't want that (though this is one of
those bands that makes me wonder why anybody'd want a
clean version ... it‚s missing the point), there's
also a clean version with, I believe, alternate bonus
tracks. At any rate, there's material unique to each
version. You can also get it on vinyl. Wicked!-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
