BASSWERK SESSIONS #02 (BASSWERK) |
| |

The novelty factor alone of a German drum and bass compilation makes Basswerk Sessions #02 worth a look. The German electronic music scene, after all, remains one most associated with the techno of Sven Väth, trance of Paul Van Dyk and house of Tiefschwarz. However, being Germany’s drum and bass label of the year at the Future Music Awards, the Basswerk crew capably shows off why in this second installment of the Sessions series, an unmixed two-disc collection of tunes from the label’s back catalogue. The tracks are slick, adhering to the label maxim of incorporating everything from punk (see the Giana Brotherz raw mash-up of more euphorically tinged trance synths against Sepultura-styled guitars on the wicked “Crossed Roots”) to psytrance influences on the Green Man & Cyctech’s epic “Feb 21st” as well as “Wide Awake” by ICR, an import from Hungary’s growing d’n’b scene. Fans of the work by DJ Die and vocalist Leonie Laws as Breakbeat Era should also appreciate the dancehall jump-up of Konrad & Coda’s “Don’t Let Me…” and fans of techstep will dig the big bass line and cutting percussion of the Green Man’s “XXX.” Check more heavy metal madness from Misanthrop’s “Hölle,” spacey jazz tech from Taxi Driver’s “Baba Bass” and the Bukem-borrowed blue notes on Jonathan Baker’s “Oddity.” Hitting on such a range of influences, from more chilled drum and bass to grandiose stadium rockers, Basswerk Sessions #2 is more testimony to Germany’s continued dominance of all things electronic. – www.basswerk.de-- review by Yuri Wuensch
