CATALPA CATALPA - HARDONCITY (OPS SOUND) |
| |

The music on this CD is very ... pastel. That's the
best way I can think of to describe it. It is music,
pretty dabbly and a bit avant garde, but music
nonetheless. It hasn't mystified into the realm of
"soundscape" or whatever you wish to dub it. At times
you feel like you‚re hearing bits and pieces of light
techno that have been cut up and re-attached in new
ways to form a new song construction. But then you'll
also hear ethereal, soothing guitar chords in other
places, complete with a strong ambient personality
bolstering the tune. Distant psychedelia and odd sound
effects are also to be discovered here. You almost
feel that a concert is being performed at some
distance and if you could only get much closer it
would all make sense. As it is the wind carrying the
sounds toward your are whipping and reshaping it in
the eddies of air, so that when it reaches you, it is
a new thing entirely. Gentle and faraway but alluring if you give it time,
Hardoncity has plenty of beauty
to share. -- review by Kristofer Upjohn
