MARVIN AYRES - CELLOSPHERE (BURNING SHED) |
| |

It's stunning that something that sounds for all the
world like total electronica is actually space music
formed from the extensive mixing, distortion and
feedbacking of classical strings instruments. Half of
the artistry of music like this is the tinkering that
happens with the actual recordings of cello and violin
playing. The mixing board itself must be recognized as
an instrument in the process of musicmaking. The
perfect soundtrack for trekking into reaches of
existence far beyond any Stanley Kubrick science
fiction movie, this conjures the feeling of what it
would sound like to be in the midst of space faring
whales (I know that sounds funny, but please take it
like I mean it), swimming through the endless depths
of the stars, deftly making slow motion ballet between
the distended radio transmissions from faraway
civilizations, whose only contact with you will be the
disintegrating, stray broadcast you now hear.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
