BUY + LISTEN

CLUB AMERICA VOL. 1 MIXED BY TREVOR SIMPSON (UBL RECORDINGS)

I know the chief point of music like this is to get up and dance, to provide the soundtrack to a party or whatnot, but it's always a tad disappointing when you pop in the CD and the music, ultimately, feels like it has no appeal beyond as beat driven tunage for a BYOB get-together. Don‚t get me wrong, I'm a bobbing fool head off listening to this, but that‚s just it. This and a couple of drinks will get you going on the dance floor or living room floor or whatever but it doesn't have so much in the way of just-listening-to-it appeal. It's got strong beats supplying the pulse to lackluster pop anthems, leaving this a CD to purchase only if you have to get the party started. And for that matter, why can't you just buy a great trance or house CD that has a point to its existence beyond just party background music? Stuff you can listen to for itself, where the music itself is the point? I mean, this doesn't suck, but it could've used some stepping up. It's a good party CD, no more and no less. Unless you're a club music junky.-- review by Kristofer Upjohn
