People are still wiping the sweat from their brows as 'PLUG IT IN', a single off Kish Kash, continues to thump dance floors everywhere, as well as reaching number 1 on official UK Dance Music Charts. An infectious pop-funk electro-thrasher featuring the vocal powerhouse J.C. Chasez (the other cute one from N'Sync), whose seductive falsetto has girls shaking at the knees.

To get to the bottom of Basement Jaxx's extraordinarily unique sound, and what it is that makes 'PLUG IT IN' such a great song, we had to get the down-low on the their influences and aspirations. Felix Buxton, half of the Jaxx along with briefly unlocks the basement to give Raves.com a little insight.

RealAudio of Plug It In from the BBC's website

Music from Basement Jaxx (especially evident on 'PLUG IT IN') is so completely original, fresh, and creative, that people are continually trying to define it with new, made up genre-mashes - trying to describe the indescribable. Luckily, the brothers Jaxx aren't too concerned with how people may try to classify their particular sound. Felix adds that, "a lot of my favourite music crosses various musical boundaries." One style of music that is refreshingly prevalent in 'PLUG IT IN', and that has been conspicuously missing from most other dance tracks and albums, is the deep and gritty neck-snapping sound of funk & soul. Going way back, Felix shares the origins of his funk influence. "When I first got into dance music, that meant rare groove, soul, funk, jazz, latin, house, hardcore, ragga and hip hop - so to me it's always been that. The whole genre came from James Brown and the like, and for me the rawness and groove is still from that. The P-funk and Prince link is probably cause they were mixing styles, race, genre, sexuality, fantasy and reality with vibrance, fearlessness and humour to create something uncompromised which is what we try to do."

There's no doubt Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx are uncompromising in their music artistry; mixing styles, concepts, and sounds; developing into albums that are bold, distinct, and so unique in the face of commercial radio - defying genres and erasing boundaries. People are certainly responsive though, in that they just recently picked up a Brit award for 'Best Dance Act'. 'PLUG IT IN' is much more than a dance track, but a thoroughly labored and inclusive production, having so many different parts, sounds, and effects that there are always new things to be heard at every listen. Music innovations, courage, and creativity from Basement Jaxx will certainly be that raw influence for future artists, and will likely have set the standard. They've kicked off a major tour to continue to promote the Kish Kash album, including a prime spot in this years Coachella Festival on May 2 in southern California. So plug yourself in; make sure you check out this song, and that you see them live this summer.
