Of all the questions to forget to ask...
I'm packing up my video gear in an upscale
board room in Beverly Hills, having just
been entranced and energized by a pair
of Duracell batteries powering a pink
rabbit toy drumming a catchy beat. Actually,
the Cooler Kids, but it felt kind of like
that! The pretty face of this band is
Sisely Treasure, and yes that's her real
name, while the man behind the velvet
curtain is Kaz Gamble, better known as
DJ Kazimir. The question that topped my
list was "why did you call your album
'Punk Debutante'?" as I can't get
even my imagination to stretch far enough
to star Sisely as a debutante, nor is
there a fiber of punk anywhere to be found
in the disco-synth candy of their album
or its strongest track and single, "All
Around the World (Punk Debutante)."
to watch our exclusive Cooler Kids interview
After our interview, I decided I really
liked the Cooler Kids. Not only did they
meet online (Sisely wanted to sing and
she admired Kaz's previous releases),
the Cooler Kids are playful, sweet and
above all fun. Its easy to see why they've
been a Disney hit with their "E is
For Everybody" - I have a feeling
the drug reference was lost on that crowd!
Their 11 track debut album is filled with
disco-fueled grooves married to straight
up bubble gum. I happen to be a (shhhhh)
big fan of bubblegum pop culture. Hello
Kitty for president! I'm sure I could
get the Cooler Kids to perform at the
fundraiser for that campaign, and we'd
have the support of everyone who secretly
still sings along to Madonna's Lucky Star.
You know who you are! With their sound,
Japanese anime-inspired logo and website
where they log on to answer questions
on their message board at least once a
week), the Cooler Kids have got their
package neatly wrapped up with a fuchsia
So what' is their live show like? I saw
them perform live here in LA just recently,
and though they sound like they could
be a full band, for right now its Sisely
singing, Kaz on the decks... just like
those late 80s acts used to do at clubs
back in the day. Did I mention they toured
with Erasure? You get the picture!
Two of their songs: "Viva La Fever"
and "E Is For Everybody" were featured
on MTVŐs "The Real World" and
ŇAll Around The World (Punk Debutante),"
is in "The Lizzy McGuire Movie."
Maybe E should be for Everywhere... so
put on your retro Deelite-loving headphones
and take a bite of the sugar-filled Cooler
