PAUL VAN DYK'S PERSONAL PLIGHT TO SAVE LIVES INTERNATIONAL DJ REFLECTS ON HIS DECISION TO JOIN THE "ROCK THE VOTE" CAMPAIGN -- words and photos by Carl Noone Jr.

While speaking to attendees at the 2004 Billboard Dance Music Summit in New York City recently, international superstar DJ Paul Van Dyk conveyed his decision to use the "Rock the Vote" campaign as a sponsor of his fall tour of the United States.

"Rock the Vote," who have registered over one million new voters so far this year alone, are backing the German hit maker and will be registering voters at the venues at which he performs.

While speaking to the crowd during a special question and answer session, featuring Billboard Magazine's Dance department head, Michael Paoletta, as the moderator, the ever-poignant Van Dyk sat eloquently as he reiterated a tale involving his face-to-face meeting with a soldier whom, after returning home to Atlanta after fighting in Iraq, had come to see Van Dyk perform that night. He proceeded to tell Van Dyk that "listening to your music saved my life," and "I don't know where I would be if I didn't have your music with me in Iraq."

Those simple sentences - no matter how truthfully they were perceived, no matter how fake or real in their "innocent" nature - served as the personal inspiration for his new political vendetta "to help empower the American youth. I wanted to help save young lives," he said, adding a bit of seriousness to the relaxed room.

Later that evening, Van Dyk was part of the spectacular bill that rocked a 4,000 capacity Crobar for the NARAS/Grammy Award blowout that also featured Sasha, DJ Rap, David Morales, Alex Gold, and Ken Jordan (of The Crystal Method).

A special VIP lounge blow-out was sponsored by BPM Magazine and featured standout talents such as Lee Cabrera, Tendroid, Hector Romero, and Junior Sanchez, all of whom rocked the house, and sent guests The Scumfrog, DJ-turned-toy-maker Scribble, and the ever-smiling Tiesto, all scrambling for space on the tiny dancefloor.

Van Dyk followed the newly-Industrial-sounding Sasha in Crobar's massive main room with a revved-up set of over-driven hard Trance that saw him throwing his hands in the air in a powerful string of "air-guitar" gyrations. Nestled neatly in the middle of an already amazing evening, his set was the pinnacle of perfection during a rock-influenced night of super-clubbing done Grammy style.

Previously that day, Van Dyk discussed the importance of his decision-making process and the perceived impact it would have on album and ticket sales. Ever the consummate professional, Van Dyk demurely quipped, "Each song means something different to different people, but to understand the song, you must be able to get into the song. And radio in America has become so one-dimensional, such bullshit, that this was not even a thought for me. I did not have to worry about what anyone thought but me."

Paul Van Dyk combines a world of socio-political insight with his strong, ethereal songwriting talent, which has long been one of the secrets to his success as a musician and remixer. "New York has become a center of cultural importance and this is why I will always come back," he told the 150 or so in attendance.

Earlier this year, the readers of BPM Magazine voted him "America's Favorite DJ" in their annual poll. Remarking on playing large U.S. festivals, such as Coachella, that combine many different types of bands, and styles of music, he said, "this only shows that people today are more open minded, listen to more things then they used to. I got to hear the Cure while I was playing, but this was very strange - hearing Mrs. Smith in the background," he said in jest, referring to the legendary lipstick-clad frontman. "Ferry (Corsten) played first, before me, but I could not watch. It was too hot for me," he added, commenting on the 103 degree heat the day of his set.

Available now through Mute is a limited edition double CD/LP release of Paul Van Dyk's current album, "Reflections." The CD release contains a bonus disc of new versions of the best tracks from Reflections in one continuous mix. The double vinyl release features these new versions on 12" DJ vinyl. With its anthemic verse, "I know you want me," "Crush" has been making waves on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales Chart since its release this past April. The visibility of the hit single, "Time of Our Lives," continues as HBO/Cinemax has licensed it for their summer on-air movie promotional spot. "Time of Our Lives" was also included in the debut episode of the new Fox series, North Shore.
