How do you get to be a producer of a documentary about Disco Donnie? Or a film that sets Shakespeare at a rave? If you're Summer Forest, you turn a lifetime of documenting the rave scene as an author and photographer into a career as a filmmaker, taking your passion for music with you along for the ride.

Summer didn't start out interested in film - at least not the motion picture type. She spent her first three years out of art school working in New York City as print producer for photographer Annie Liebovitz, then as Photo & Art Editor for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine. Her first rave-oriented project was co-authoring the book "Searching For The Perfect Beat: Flyer Designs of The American Rave Scene" - though rave culture was not a novel interest for her by any means. Summer is a self-admitted ex-raver who has always been deeply involved in the music scene, from the first underground rave parties in New York City to her recent involvement with producing the "Rise" soundtrack and a new compilation, "Defining Tech."

Part of the RISE soundtrack proceeds are being donated to the EM:DEF (Electronic Music Defense and Education Fund), to pay for people who can't afford legal court defense from unjust prosecutions such as the infamous Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act (aka the "RAVE act" and in all its various forms) - including Disco Donnie. Summer's first movie project was producing the feature-length documentary "Rise" - a documentary film with a narrative edge, thanks to its main star Disco Donnie, the New Orleans party promoter who is gaining worldwide notoriety for having been arrested under the Federal "Crack House" law for throwing parties. It follows Donnie and a host of other characters into the southern rave and club underground in and around New Orleans. [Click for our full review]

After relocating to the West Coast, Summer met Gil Cates, Jr. and the two joined forces to produce A Midsummer Night's Rave. This modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, is set at a rave two years in the future. The plot is described as such: "A group of friends share an adventure fueled by pounding beats, a magical Puck and his glowing pills, and a hot pursuit of some stolen drug money. A few well wishing fairies, an unexpected turn of events and a some changes of heart lead this entourage through one unforgettable night." Directed by Gil Cates Jr. and produced by Cates Jr., along with Summer Forest Hoeckel, the film features performances by Andrew Keegan, Lauren German, Corey Pearson, Sunny Mabrey, Chad Lindberg, Glen Badyna, Jason London, Carrie Fisher and more. It's been screening at film festivals and hopefully will get picked up for distribution in theaters or on DVD soon!
