"Ultraviolet" Review
Breaks, disco, house, tribal... what is going on? Serious dance floor music, bouncing through genres like a raver in new trainers. Go Touche! Go!

Coming off a stellar JDJ mix CD, "Ultraviolet," DJ Touche continues to revel in his deeper late-night side. From spinning parties at Manumission in Ibiza, founding The Wiseguys, and producing mega-successful tunes UK and the US (remember last year's "Start The Commotion"?), Touche simultaneously brushes off mainstream success and retains underground credibility. He can slip a drop from Eminem in his mix or having his track animate frogs on a Budwiser commercial, but manages to stay focused on his seductive groove technique.

Raves.com caught up with Touche for this exclusive interview by email!

Raves.com: Americans are just getting up to speed with who you are, despite your rather illustrious career first as the Wiseguys and now as DJ Touche.. what you think makes your DJing different than the other DJs out there - why should people buy a DJ Touche disk or come to hear you DJ?

DJ Touche: I THINK I APPROACH PLAYING DIRTY HOUSE AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC WITH THE STYLE OF A HIP HOP DJ. THAT'S HOW I LEARNT MY TRADE, SO IT'S JUST THE WAY I DO THINGS. I WILL MAKE YOU DANCE YOUR ASS CLEAN OFF!!!

How did you come up with the name DJ Touche?

I HONESTLY CAN'T REMEMBER.

Is there one type of music you like above all others?

NO. I LOVE ALL KINDS OF STUFF, FROM THE PSYCH ROCK AND FUNK IN MY "CRATES" TO THE NEWEST HOUSE, HIP HOP etc..

You've been to the US a number of times - did you go to any hip hop clubs?

YEAH. I'VE BEEN TO QUITE A FEW IN NEW YORK, GOING BACK TO 1992.

What did you think of them?

WELL STRETCH ARMSTRONG PARTIES WERE ALWAYS GOOD.

Where do you live in the UK?

LONDON.

Do you have a steady girlfriend?

YES.

List everything that you have in all your pockets right this minute!

MY WALLET, PHONE, KEYS, GUM, AND MY FEE AND A COUPLE OF PETROL RECEIPTS FROM LAST NIGHT'S GIG!

Ok, getting back to the 'serious' question here... The Wiseguys had a #2 hit in the UK in 1998 with "Oooh La La" and had another top ten hit with "Start the Commotion" (which was also a hit in the States) - but your upcoming JDJ release "Ultraviolet" is your first ever DJ mix album. Why didn't you do one before?

THE OPPORTUNITY JUST NEVER AROSE. IT'S SOMETHING I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THOUGH.

Why is it called "Ultraviolet"?

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CLUB EXPERIENCE. DARKNESS AND ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT. AND ALSO THE UV LIGHT THAT HITS YOU AS YOU STUMBLE OUT INTO THE DAWN.

How did you decide which tracks to have in your mix - describe what it is that you like about a few of them exactly.

WHEW. I WANTED TO HAVE A MIXTURE OF BRAND NEW TRACKS AND STUFF THAT I HAVE KEPT IN MY BOX FOR A WHILE, BUT ISN'T REALLY THAT WELL KNOWN. IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF PLAYING THROUGH PILES OF TUNES AND FINDING THE STRONGEST ONES THAT WOULD ALSO WORK OFF EACH OTHER. AS FAR AS WHAT I LKE ABOUT THEM, THEY ARE ALL TRACKS I HAVE TRIED AND TESTED IN CLUBS TO A GREAT REACTION, BUT ALSO STAND UP TO LISTENING OUTSIDE OF THAT ENVIRONMENT. THEY EACH HAVE VARYING STRENGTHS, BUT REAL FAVOURITES INCLUDE THE TRACKS BY THE AUDIO BULLYS, MILTON JACKSON, LAX FEAT. AJAI, AND ELITE FORCE - ALL FIERCE! OH, AND I PUT THE PAL JOEY ON AT THE END AS IT HAS REAL MEMORIES - A SLEPT-ON CLASSIC.

Who was the first person you played the first draft of the Ultraviolet mix for? Did you change it from your first go at it?

I DID A ROUGH VERSION AT HOME AFTER A LOT OF WORK ON THE RUNNING ORDER etc. AND THANKFULLY IT WORKED A TREAT. SO WHEN I WENT INTO THE STUDIO I KNEW WHICH PASSAGES TO SHORTEN, WHERE TO EDIT TRACKS, AND WHERE TO DROP STUFF OVER THE TOP. I DIDN'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF DOING LOADS OF VERSIONS -I HAD TO BE TIGHT, AND THE FIRST TIME THE PEOPLE AT JOURNEYS BY DJ HEARD IT PROPERLY WAS WHEN I DELIVERED THE FINAL MASTER!

What do you have coming up after "Ultraviolet"?

A 12" ON HEAT CALLED "DIZZY SPELL / BLACK LIGHT", A REMIX OF JADELL'S "HIP JOINT" ON ILLICIT, AND A TUNE CALLED "TEMPER" WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT'S COMING OUT ON JUNIOR. PLUS I'M WORKING ON NEW STUFF POTENTIALLY FOR A NEW ALBUM.

What's the best thing about being interviewed by email?

YOU CAN DO IT AT 3AM HALF-CUT AND THEN GO BACK NEXT DAY TO DELETE ALL YOUR RUBBISH ANSWERS!

Thanks so much Touche!!!
