  DJ Jupe

Born in South Africa in the early 70's, Jupe moved to England at the age of 2 and has since made a name for himself in the underground music scene. Spinning mostly hard house and trace, Jupe currently holds residencies with Union @ Montage in San Diego CA, and Milk in London. He regularly performs all over California with some of the biggest named DJ's out there right now. When Jupe isn't working on mastering his 3-point shots or grabbing some rays at a sunny San Diego beach, you can bet he's tearing up the turntables with his awesome unique style of mixing hard house and trance into anthem sounding bliss. I managed to catch up with this talented DJ in September in front of the venue he was headlining. If the massive line of people wrapped around the block wasn't impressive enough, then the shouts and screams from the fans as we pushed our way through security definitely did it for me. Jupe is a Superstar, even if he doesn't know it yet. Lucky for me, I was able to convince him to give me a few minutes of his time to investigate this mysterious DJ from the UK. But first, here's my review of DJ Jupe's night in LA.

Upon arriving at "Club Naked LA" located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, the first thing that caught my eye was the massive line of people waiting to be let into the venue. It was Late September and DJ Jupe was the headlining act of the night. Eager to see him in action I grab my media pass & camera and make my way to the door. There I run into an attractive young man with a fabulous English accent and shiny metal record case; after weeks of emails and phone tag, Jupe and I have finally met. With his records in hand and his entourage of gorgeous girls close behind, we all walk past the hordes of people squirming to get inside and dance. From the mass of clubbers you can hear some of them yell "JUPE you fucking rock man!" but Jupe chooses to look the other way, he isn't very comfortable with his notoriety just yet. We walk in and he introduces me to his girlfriends, and to some of the other DJ's that are preparing to go on. Jupe is scheduled to spin from 2am-5am, and I am there for the whole night, its now 11pm. We go back into the office and start the interview. The first thing I noticed is that Jupe is different from a lot of the other DJ's I have interviewed. He isn't about all the hoop-la and hype that goes along with being a DJ. He is in it for the music, for the hopes of introducing someone to a type of sound they never knew existed, or maybe even inspire someone to take up spinning themselves. After the interview we part ways until 2am- ShowTime.

I go on stage and look out into the crowd... the place is going off. EVERYONE'S hands are in the air; everyone is jumping up and down giving the illusion that you are looking at a sea of sweating bodies. The music is loud and the bass is shaking you to the core. Jupe is now on the turntables and the place explodes. With camera in hand, even I start to dance and can't stop. The music is insane with energy, the lights are flashing and there is just nothing left to do but dance like no one is watching. I had a fabulous time at Naked that night. Jupe's set was fucking awesome; it demanded attention. The vibe was great, the crowd was great, and the music was off the hook. What more can I say- go see Jupe for yourself, promise you wont be disappointed!
