"Chill out". "Relax". These aren't phrases you'll hear skylab2000 say
very often. Why? Cos banging techno, trance and progressive house is
skylab2000's calling card.
Since 1994, Dennis Barton has been traveling city to city as skylab2000
playing his brand of hard hitting dance music.
With a solid following and a full time tour schedule there are
similarities in attitude to bands like Phish or the Grateful Dead.
Musically a world apart, but the "travel the world" ideology is there in
Los Angeles is home base, but it's rare to find skylab2000 at home. The
road is his living room, where most weekends he's off playing an event.
New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Vancouver, Puerto Rico, Russia,
Hong Kong, Turkey and hundreds of small towns and cities.
The journey has taken him from playing small undergrounds, to performing
at massive overseas festivals - from working with unknown local DJs, to
sharing the spotlight with the best the world has to offer. DJs like
Carl Cox, Donald Glaude, Juan Atkins, Sandra Collins, DJ Dan, Joey
Beltram, Frankie Bones, Christopher Lawrence, Bad Boy Bill and a
thousand others have been there. World renowned bands Deelite, Gus Gus,
Lamb, Spicelab, Run DMC, Utah Saints, Uberzone, Crystal Method, Bush and
Republica have all shared the stage with skylab2000.
Hitting the streets and playing live is the main focus, but now and
again this live energy is recorded and released. The early 12" "Auburn"
includes remixes by Astralwerk's Gearwhore, and the very first remix by
DJ Taylor of "Anomaly" (Calling Your Name) fame. In the UK, JDJ released
additional mixes to a huge reaction, including a prestigious spot on
Pete Tong's "Essential Selection" on London's BBC Radio 1. Multiple
follow-up singles have gathered similar response.
Several tracks have been released exclusively on the internet. On the
giant mp3.com web site, two skylab2000 tracks became the number one most
down-loaded songs overall. On that site alone, there's been well over
half a million down-loads of skylab2000 songs!
You can find skylab2000 tracks on DJ mix CDs by Thomas Michael, DJ
Grover, Dj Psycho-Bitch (Crobar), John Kelly, Taylor, Sol
Brothers/Andrew Galea (UK), DJ Keoki and many others.
On CD, skylab2000 has multiple solo releases, including the new
"Frequent Flyer" CD, officially released in January 2002, plus a brand
new single "TEN - Reentry mix" (Genesis Project Recordings), available
2002 is here. New releases - new cities. Stay tuned!
