My name is DJ MARGA. I am the former band member and producer of the legendary south LONDON-based crew known as Katch22. DJ Marga had been instrumental in British hip-hop, for his production style, as well as had been central to the success of the imprint they were on. This imprint being Kold Sweat. ************************************************************** I Started Dj ing in 1986 with a Sound call CRYSTALPHONIC from Brixton, which was a reggae sound passed down from the 1970s Father to Son with 4 face 18" speaker boxes and all. I was da man who used to help STRING UP da set .Around the same time I teamed up with Paul & Ian " SOULBRO" Young who went to Alabama in da US and found an Airport Hanger full of dusty 45s HE IS THE KING OF CRATEDIGGERS .WE Started FUNK MAFIA . CRYSTALPHONIC and FUNK MAFIA played at NOTTING HILL Carnival in a spot kept by from the 1970s sound and played from 1986 to 1989. ************************************************************************************************************************* We did many Warehouse and House FUNK JAMS. The most famous being FUNK & THINGS .People used to see the MOET bottle flyer and they knew what was to come. There Was only SHAKE AND FINGERPOP ,FAMILY FUNKTION,and a few others at the time. The scene became MAINSTREAM ( after 1989 Dingwalls on Sunday )and they started to Label the scene RARE GROOVE & ACID JAZZ. What came before these labels was pure magic. ************************************************************************************************************************* Another member of Katch 22, Huntkillbury Finn's first band 'Black Phantom Reigns Supreme' was just about to release product on Cooltempo Records, when one of the crew members became ill. ************************************************************************************************************************* Un-dismayed by this experience, Huntkillbury Finn soon formed another group, known as 3 Da Hard Way. the name Katch 22 came later, with myself, as well as DJ Brainiac. ************************************************************************************************************************** Katch 22 were in a clique called The HQ Squad (this being in 1988) at the time, so the first record that Katch 22 members' contributed to was a posse cut produced and mixed by Hijack' DJ SUPREME called "THE BURIAL PROCEEDINGS IN THE COARSE OF THREE KNIGHTS', which was released 1989 on Music of Life Records, featuring THE ICEPICK and SHAKA SHAZZAM of STANDING OVATION. ************************************************************************************************************************* My introduction into music production was DJ SUPREME ( HIJACK ). Katch Mission was recorded on a 8 Track in his bedroom. As far as my discography started with a Battersea-based group called Rudeboy Business. This track was called "COOL SAILING" [Cat. No. KS103]. The owner of Kold Sweat was so impressed, that he signed Katch 22. ************************************************************************************************************************* Over the next few years, Katch 22 released numerous 12" singles, 6 EPs, and THREE albums between the years of 1990 to 1995. ************************************************************************************************************************** To big myself up, Katch 22 were the first British hip-hop group to record & release three albums, an unprecendented feat at the time! During this period (1990-95), NO OTHER BRITISH HIP-HOP PRODUCER RELEASED so many tracks, in such a short time-frame, with me having around 74 TRACKS RELEASED !!! ************************************************************* Due to bun-out I chilled out for 10 yrs and became a family man. The Marga phone has started to ring again and I am back DJ ing 80s SOUL, 70s SUPER HEAVY FUNK within the Snowbording club scene also doing digital video , Adverts and music production work .
