September 2003
This time around we have several bits that have flooded our mailbox
this month, including new releases, events, and news. ÊWe are definitely
feeling the Static Revenger Presents The Freshmaka with the white
label 12" Everyone (Static Revenger Mix). This is a fun
tune that showcases Static Revenger's ability to bring the funk while
the track is enhanced even further the alluring vocals of the ever beautiful
Angelique. ÊOn the flip side is the very funky I Feel You Inside
Me (Full Tilt Mix), a perfect tune for a bit of fun in the sun be
it at the beach, by the pool, or even an intimate cocktail hour with
a special someone. ÊStatic Revenger has also brought what has easily
become my track of the month, the addictive Static Revenger featuring
The Mullet Men Long Time (Mixed Signals). ÊWith one
of the first releases from the newly formed label started by Detroit
DJs Mike Scruggs and DJ Rhythm, Long Time should
be a sign of good things to come. ÊWith what sounds like a classic rock
sample launched into a pumping groove, this track is sure to keep Static
Revenger's name at the top of many DJ charts. ÊAn extra point sure to
draw attention to this track is the remix from Pete Lorimer (aka
29 Palms), whose 29 Palms Funky House Departure is sure
to gain a following of its own. ÊLorimer is also coming out with the
follow-up to last year's smash tune Touch The Sky (Experience),
with the release under his 29 Palms moniker of the track I Don't
Care (Mixed Signals). This is a thumping, progressive stomper that
is gaining support from DJs such as Pete Tong, Steve Lawler,
and Peter Rauhofer. The NYC-based Star 69 Records has
also put out the third in their Extended Mixes series. The latest addition,
Star 69 Extended Mixes Volume 3 (Star 69) contains several tracks
of note, including the Funky Green Dogs Rise Up (Oscar G.
Space Dub) , the Latin-tinged beat of LNR's Work It To The Bone
(Tribal Tarante Remix), label head Peter Rauhofer's work with the
Pet Shop Boys as The Collaboration brings the pulsing
Break 4 Love (Peter Rauhofer Tribeca Dub), and the floor is sure
to spring to life at peak time with Celeda's The Underground
(DJ Vibe Remix) and Javith & Lemoch's Feel The Drums (Peter
Rauhofer NYC Edit).ÊSarah Brightman, better known for her
run in the Broadway musical Cats and for her many solo albums which
have sold over 15 million copies, has released the title cut from her
upcoming release Harem (Angel Records). ÊForget any preconceived
notions regarding her operatic endeavors as Brightman adapts a classic
Fado track from Portugal to craft the angelic Harem (Cancao Do Mar) with remixes from Robbie Rivera and Manny Lehman.ÊJahkey
B. has released a stormer under his pseudonym Amuka, which
is Hebrew and African for "wake up; to awaken", and that seems
to be exactly what he was trying to do to the dancefloor with Appreciate
Me (Star 69). ÊThe track originally produced by Jahkey B. and sung
by Funkadelic backup singer Sheila Brody is a stormer that is
gaining support from several top DJ's, including David Waxman who included the track in his mix comp for the recent Ministry of
Sound: American Anthems (MOS) release, and The Riddler at New York's
WTKU. ÊIf you prefer your beats at a more rapid fire pace, then the
Speaker Junkies have the answer. ÊTheir latest single, Un-Human
(Beetlejuice Remix) (acropolisRPM) is a hard dance charger
where the church bell tolls as the beats fly by. ÊOn the flip side are
the rave-oriented Time To Get Crazy and Electronic Symphony,
which is peak hour madness sure to get the hands pumping in the air.
ÊRising Italian producer Andrea Doria has released Bucci Bag (Star 69), a track aimed at those a bit more into themselves than the
music. ÊWith remixes from several talents ranging from Larry Tee to Richard ÔHumpty' Vission to The Playgroup, its no wonder
that the track has already been receiving support from Peter Rauhofer,
Fatboy Slim, Seb Fontaine, Steve Lawler, and Judge
Jules just to name a few.
Another highlight of the postal delivery experience this month has
been the copy of How To DJ Right: The Art And Science Of Playing
Records by dance culture literati Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster.
ÊAfter constructing of the most in-depth tomes regarding the history
of DJ culture, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.ÊThe duo has returned
with a well-designed manual that covers every step to help you get out
of the bedroom and into the club. ÊSpeaking of getting noticed, congrats
to Golan Globus (the duo of Joshua Ryan and brother Erik
Emm), for getting MTV to use their track Blazer in a commercial
promoting the music channel's new Sunday night line-up. ÊThe 60-second
commercial, which began airing during the MTV Video Music Awards,
will continue to air in heavy rotation worldwide. ÊBlazer is
featured on Joshua Ryan's full-length album, By Design, which
was released in February 2003. ÊOther things of interest for the month
of September, include the recent announcement that the final worldwide
transmission of the Dancestar USA Ð The American Dance Music Awards for this year's awards show will be broadcast during September by leading
US cable networks including AOL/TIME Warner, Charter & Comcast who
have won the opportunity to air the one-hour TV special through Music
Choice as part of the Music Choice Concert Series on over 160 channels
reaching over 30 million households across the country. ÊAlso, we want
to send congrats to BT since his single Simply Being Loved (Somnambulist), from his latest album Emotional Technology (Nettwerk America) has just made it to the Guinness Book of World
Records as the track with the most edits ever, with an astounding 6,178
stutter edits. Ê
A couple of events to check out include the Electronic Music Expo
Hawaii (EME Hawaii), being held in Honolulu, Hawaii September 23
through 28. ÊEME Hawaii is the Pacific Rim's largest annual music industry
gathering, assembled to unite artists, producers, labels, and promoters
in the common goal of advancing the international electronic music industry.
ÊVisit their website at www.emehawaii.com for more information. ÊAnd if you are in NYC, be sure to stop in at
the Billboard 2003 Dance Music Summit being held September 22
through September 24 at the Union Square Ballroom. ÊAnd don't forget
to submit your entries to the 3rd Annual ROCKSTAR GAMES UPLOAD Online
Media Awards by September 30, 2003. ÊEntries are being accepted
for Short Subject Film, Deejay Mix, Short Story, and Multimedia: Interactive.
