Our former singles reviews and news column, by Editor Shawn Wallace, where he gave the latest Vinyl and CD singles a spin.
October 2003
With a season of costumes and candy upon us, it only seems fitting
this month to start off with actress-turned singer to starts us in our
hunt for tricks and treats. Daphne Ruben-Vega (Wild
Things, Flawless) has decided that a clubbed-out cover of Elton
John's classic Rocket Man is her way to skyrocket
to the top of the charts. With remixes that range from the Dezrok
Club Mix through the highly enticing Vibelicious Chill Out
Mix, this cover is certain to at least get her into orbit. A big
surprise again this month comes from Velocity Code with the track Beautiful Outside featuring the vocals of Australian-born
Leila. Producer E-Smoove gives this
track a very deep makeover while the remix from the team of Juan
Martinez and Pete Lorimer (aka 29 Palms) is
a seductive blend of melody sure to please all who are anointed with
the sound. Another gem for the month is the single from Lili
Haydn Anything (Gabriel & Dresden Remixes) (Private
Music/Arista). The breakout production duo of Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden have crafted yet another set of cuts
sure to have DJs across the globe yearning for their own copy. For the
soulful searcher, we have a track taken from The Latin Project's
latest album Nueva Musica, which has steadily been climbing
a number of charts. Le Lo Lai (Masters At Work/Incognito Remixes) (Electric Monkey) is a collection of smooth vibes and instruments that
combine for a traditional Latin style that is sure to fit an afternoon
under the sun filled with cocktails and dancing among friends.
We have also been hit with a double strike of drum and bass from Mulder with Backward Mentality/Disco Hoover (Shakedown). Backward
Mentality will throttle you with cuts launched at a rapid fire pace
and a rumbling bass line. Disco Hoover is a swirling cut that
pummels the speakers with an intense bass barrage. Then there is Allen
Gamble Militant (Fusion Technology Records). We want
to give a special thanks to our friend Grimace for getting this track
to us. For Militant, the gamble has paid off with a banging
house tune sure to attract any late night dancefloor dweller. The Robert
Hood Militant Remix is only that much more addictive than the original
with a stinging synthesizer only adding fuel to the fire. Yet another
great addition to our archives this month is Magistrate and
N'icol Expansion/Mental State (Shakedown). Expansion
is fluid d-n-b sure to get the hands in the air while Mental
State is a deeper cut geared to get the heads bouncing. And from
one of the most anticipated releases for this month, we have been provided
with what is easily our track of the month, Paul Van Dyk Featuring
Vega 4 Time Of Our Lives/Connected (Mute). Time
Of Our Lives marks PVD's first foray into working with a band and
let's just say we're extremely pleased with the result. The flipside
of this twelve-inch contains the track Connected that PVD wrote
for use in Motorola's latest ad campaign for the Motorola C350 cell
phone (you can even catch PVD in the commercial using the sound… go
Paul!). These are just a sampling of what is to come on Paul Van Dyk's
third artist album Reflections (Mute) to be released this month.
Have you voted for your favorite DJ? It's that time of year DJ
Mag Top 100 Poll which means that email is flying across the
internet looking for your support quicker than candidates are dropping
from the California gubernatorial race. Let your voice be heard and
vote at www.djmag.com/vote.asp today! For those who are still reeling from the liplock between Britney
Spears and Madonna at the MTV Video Music
Awards, fear not… Britney has more for you. Peter Rauhofer (Star 69), a Madonna fave, has been tapped to remix Spears' new single
Me Against the Music from her forthcoming album The Zone (Jive) (formerly Get in the Zone). This track, which also features
the material girl herself, was produced by RedZone and has been sent to several producers, including Outkast.
There are a few tours worth mentioning, including the ever-sexy DJ
Keri touring in support of her Radikal Party Mix (Radikal)
and don't miss her pictorial in Playboy next month. To learn more about
DJ Keri, check out her official site at www.dj-keri.com for all the latest info. Also on the road is Lee Burridge who will be starting off the month of October at Icon in Orlando, Florida
and traveling through Denver and Atlanta on the final dates of his tour
supporting his addition to the Global Underground 24:7 compilation series.
And yes it is true, Party Monster is on the prowl.
Whether you were able to attend one of the legendary parties of the
early nineties held by the flamboyant leader of the club-kid movement
or not, Party Monster is an exploration of the rise and eventual downfall
of one of clubland's most notorious glamour children, Michael
Alig. The buzz is that Macaulay Culkin (as
Alig) and Seth Green (as James St. James)
have truly embodied the fabulous duo who once commanded NYC's party
elite. If you haven't had an opportunity to see this film yet, check
out www.partymonster.com for
a theater listing and film background. Lastly, if you haven't noticed
yet, MTV has started airing their Monster Mix show daily between 4-5 PM EST. This program, produced by Promo
Only, is an hour long continuous mix of dance music videos
(there is a hip hop version as well). Not your ordinary Britney and
Justin stuff (although they are in there), but remixes both new and
old from several top names.
