Our former singles reviews and news column, by Editor Shawn Wallace, where he gave the latest Vinyl and CD singles a spin.
November 2003
It's the time of tricks and treats and this month is sure of the sweets
that will satisfy almost any craving. The Soulplanet Jazz Ensemble
supplies two delectable bits, starting with "Is It The Way U"
(Soulplanet Recordings) featuring the vocals of Ilayali. This
track is truly the smooth intersection of jazz, house, and soul. Always
aiming to please the ensemble returns with "Sugar, Baby, Darlin'"
featuring Xavior. The club vocal is a lively jazz groove built
on a solid foundation of keys and bass with a certain flair for the
Latin jazz sound that adds a whole new dimension. From our friends in
the north comes Andrew Ahrendt with his latest release "Asleep
On Acid" (Kompasz Records), with a longer soundscape that embraces
the aesthetic of techno's aural realm while the flip side "Fade
Resistant" is punctuated by clearly more cohesive layers. For the
visually stimulated, DJ Me DJ You have release their "People
Together" DVD (Eenie Meenie Records), a light tune with a nod to
the hippie style displaying the wealth of creativity for the people
who typically dwell behind the scenes.
On the digital front, Ferry Corsten's new Moonshine single,
'Rock Your Body Rock', will be available on Apple's iTunes. Corsten
himself launches a US tour on November 6 in Atlanta, Georgia. Another
bit to feed your craving is Ono's "Will I"/"Fly"
(Mind Train). The vinyl edition features remixes from Rob Rives, and
the duo of John Creamer and Stephane K while the Maxi-CD features
three downtempo bonus cuts. Madelin Zero is another vocalist
to be on the lookout for this month with the Circ track "Destroy
She Said" (Radikal). This tune is pop to the core, yet it maintains
a bit of an edge that helped it to become one of the standout tracks
on the recent RPM-Radikal Party Mix mixed by DJ Keri. Well-known
NYC singer Lula is back with "My Empire" (Star 69).
Star 69 favorites Airmale and DJ Ohzee & The Butcha provide
mixes that are true Star 69 tribal fodder while the remix from label
head Peter Rauhofer takes a slightly different, yet equally stunning
approach. The remix that can't be missed is the Peakfriendz Trigressive
Mix, a well-played gamble that is a slight departure for the traditional
tribal imprint.
While you are out wondering the night, fear not -- Oscar G
and Ralph Falcon have released a tribal stomper from their latest
Murk album. The track titled "Believe" (Tommy Boy) is a striking
production. The Rosabel Vocal Mix is sprinkled with the Latin
rhythms that they have been known to master while the Double Six
Remix from friend and DJ/Producer Greg "Stryke" Chin
adds a blend of melody beyond the pounding drum line. One of the better
experiments is sound this month comes from the merging of Ellis Miah
(half of Orange Factory production/ songwriting team) and Jody Den
Broeder (Thunderpuss programmer) mixed with a blessing of
vocals from former Snap! Vocalist Thea Austin to create
the Beat Hustlerz. Their track "Just About Had Enough"
(Star 69), a funky threat of a woman heading out the door, should definitely
get many people heading to the dance floor. Watch out for this one as
it is already receiving attention from radio mixshows in LA and NYC.
After what seemed as though it could have been an experiment gone
awry at a certain video music awards, the reigning pop-princess Britney
Spears has released the first single from her upcoming In The Zone
album on Jive Records. For her first collaboration, "Me Against The
Music" featuring Madonna (Jive) the one woman media-giant has
decided to once again connect (this time without the liplock) with the
original queen of pop for one her best club tunes yet. While the track
is peppered with hints of her prior explorations of the Neptunes audio
cabinet, the combining of these two marquee names seems to be long overdue.
This month Madonna-favorite Peter Rauhofer has also released "This Is
My House" (Star 69). The Peter's Back In The Day Mix is a touch
of what it was like as he was building the foundation of his reputation
while giving a sneak preview of what to expect from his upcoming artist
album. In addition, to the taste of what is to come, the CD single boasts
exclusive bonus remixes of the 1991 Club 69 track "Unique" featuring
the vocals of Kim Cooper.
Descent has been blowing up all over the place during 2003
with releases on several labels, including Tune Inn and Release. The
latest release "Electric Storm (Thomas Penton Remix)" (Propulsion Records)
has once again compiled the right amount of energy and tribal touches
sure to gain continued success. This is definitely our rising star to
watch with the track receiving support from several major DJs, including
Mark Lewis (Mixology), Jerry Bonham (Spundae), and
Hernan Cattaneo (Perfecto), just to name a few.
