REVOLUTIONS - ARCHIVES
Our former singles reviews and news column, by Editor Shawn Wallace, where he gave the latest Vinyl and CD singles a spin.

December 2003

Wow, is it really December already?? It has been a great year for dance music (and for the family!) Are you ready for the New Year's Eve parties? Are you heading out to a major event to be one of thousands? Hitting the local club for a bash? Or planning an intimate evening at home with a couple of close friends? Don't wait, plan now, it'll be here soon. But in the meantime, here are a few tracks that have arrived to get you ready for your year-end bash!

Recover celebrates their 30th release on December 15 with the latest from label head Simon Eve & Scott Mac 'Always' (Recover). Be on the lookout for the Wavestorm Remix from Pablo Gargano which has been getting play from several DJs including hard dance fave BK and Dave Pearce (BBC Radio 1). Also coming on the 15th from the Recoverworld.com family are tracks from John Askew with 'Air Guitar' / 'Fu*K Private Ryan (We're Dancing)' (Discover) and Scottish favorites Jason Cortez & Phil York with 'Freaks' on the Recharge imprint. Another highlight is the Swedish duo of Zoo Brazil also known as John Andersson & Johan Emmoth, who have finally released their 'Future Chock EP' (Kass), which has been described as showcasing a "retrofuturistic, electronic Chicago sound". Trainspotters should be on the lookout as this release is already gaining wide support from DJs including Hipp-E of H-Foundation). The EP is available through WAS - Word And Sound, but you can catch some sound clips at the links listed below. For more info, contact WAS - Word And Sound www.wordandsound.net (worldwide distribution) or J Peterson at Kass Recordings www.kassrecordings.com info@kassrecordings.com.

For those of you always on the lookout for a worthy free download, Revolutions is hear to deliver in conjunction with Lo Recordings, click your choice of the following links for a cracking 12-minute mix from Red Snapper! The mix titled the Super Snapper Mash-Up, is a hybrid of a few of the tracks, put together by Jay Burnett (the engineer behind Planet Rock and Licensed to Ill amongst others), and combines elements of the versions by Radioactive Man, Depth Charge, Rothko and Rich Thair is an essential 12 minutes of twisted Red Snapper glory. For more info, check out the Lo Recordings website at www.lorecordings.com. To listen to this a stream or an mp3 download of this mix, just pick your link below.

The Australian act Infusion is another huge story from this year. Following the success of their track "Legacy" which was even included on the recent Perfecto Presents: Paul Oakenfold - Great Wall (Perfecto), they are set to hit us with a few more releases including the electro-rock-new wave fusion of 'Girls Can Be Cruel' featuring their own remix, the industrial-tinged 'Dead Souls', and the deep, darkness of 'Troika'. Be sure to keep an eye for great things from this band in the coming year.

Star 69 brings us 'Kiss My Eyes' from the mysterious project that is Bob Sinclar. The back of the CD single says it all for this one…Tango! While Bob Sinclar may not actually exist, this is an inescapable beat featuring remixes from Airmale, That Kid Chris, and Angel Moraes. Coming soon be on the lookout for the 'Kiss My Eyes' music video featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme

A definite must-have for your record box this month is 'Lucky Star', the lead track from Basement Jaxx's new album Kish Kash (Astralwerks). The album is already being heralded as their best work yet and 'Lucky Star', which features Mercury Music Prize winner Dizzee Rascal, is a straight-ahead tune that is already screaming into the charts. The only thing to make your mind up over here is whether to jump, shake it or scream. Also be sure to check out the new releases at Chris Fortier's Fade Records from Dan Morris & Shylock 'Bahdatu (Mixes by Chris Fortier & Kolo and Randall Jones)' and Raves.com interviewee Descent 'Round Midnight & Tempura' (Fade). While you're at the website, be sure to check into their new mp3 download service. And be on the lookout for Fade releases from Steve Porter & Chris Reavey, Woven, and Chris Micali in coming months.

After looking through these tracks and with the end of the year upon us, we thought it would be interesting to find out what have been your favorite tracks from 2003?

Here are some of Shawn's picks:

Paul Van Dyk "Nothing But You" (Mute/Vandit)
Motorcycle "As The Rush Comes" (Nettwerk America)
BT "Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved)" (Nettwerk America)
DJ Hyper "Catnip" (Kilowatt)
Kaskade "It's Me, It's You" (Om)
Schiller "Schiller" (Radikal)

Now we want to hear what were your favorite tracks of 2003? Send in your answers and look for a recap of your favorites in the January 2004 edition of Revolutions. Tell us why these tracks stuck with you (in one or two sentences please).

On a personal note, let me take a second to say that this has been a great year for my family and me. We would like to thank all of our friends in the dance community for your continued support. Keep the music alive.
