REVOLUTIONS - ARCHIVES
These are the archives of our former singles reviews and news column, by Editor Shawn Wallace, where he gave the latest Vinyl and CD singles a spin.
July 2004
Yes my friends it has been a long two-month hiatus, but we are back and booming like never before with a sampling of what has had our feet moving, hearts beating, and booty shaking for the start of our summer. Summer is off to a great start with recent releases from a variety of well-respected talent ranging from Sashas latest for Global Underground to the amazing new Beastie Boys album. So lets Ch-ch-check it out
System Recordings kicks this journey off with a track from one of the founding fathers of the trance genre, DJ Micro. Micros latest single Penetrate (System). Features the Heated remix which adds a thumping bass line and synthesized effects to give it that special touch for old school ravers. Label mate Bryan Cox has produced a classic peak-hour track Music Is Movin (Original Mix) (System) and the track certainly will get you moving with an abundance of booty-shaking beats.
In one of the most anticipated pairings to come along Tiesto featuring BT Love Comes Again (Mark Norman Remix) (Nettwerk) marks the collaboration between two of the top names in the industry. The Dutch trance master lays the groundwork for his American musical counterpart to apply his vocal talents and create a track that has no equivalentthis is exactly what you would expect from Tiesto and BT and so much more. Look for the track on Tiestos latest album Just Be. And speaking of BT, the award-winning DJ/Producer has released The Technology EP (Nettwerk America), the follow-up to his chart-topping single Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved). This EP features stellar remixes of The Great Escape, Superfabulous, and The Force of Gravity from the likes of Tiesto, Dylan Rhymes, and more.
For the heavier of heart, drum-and-bass label du jour HUMAN is ready to fill your summer roster with releases from Kaos & Karl K & Jae Kennedy Moonraker / Studio 54 (Human), whose lush keys provide an elegant backdrop to this stormer, this is a huge tune. Label founder Dieselboy also combines with ffequent collaborator Kaos for Barrier Break (Human) with a heavy bass line and a funky break section that cant be missed. The flip side of the track features Submission (Human), a cut that wont take much to bring you into the fold, another amazing cut from one of the preeminent duos in DnB today.
Hip-hop producer Sharkey brings a sampling of his brand of hip-hop and electronica fusion to the tables with Fuzz (featuring Cannibal Ox) and Snobird (featuring The Pharcyde) each featured on his recent album Sharkeys Machine. While Deborah Cox steps out on her own for Easy As Life (Tony Moran Club Mix) (Disney), which in the hands of the Tony Moran has produced a standout club cut. Hip-hopera star Traedonya has released the single Beloved (Prohibition Records) from her upcoming Elemental Change album with remixes that include the interesting Latin Caribbean Mix.
The former freak of nature and sexy diva Anastacia is back for more with Left Alone Outside (Jason Nevins Global Club Mix) (Epic), a rocking mix that keeps us wanting more. Forgive him the former boy band transgressions, JC Chasezs second single All Day Long I Dream About Sex (Jive) says what many only wish they could.
Several other tracks to lookout for as you peruse the poolside looking for a place to stake your claim includes Grenada Superstar (Callea & Rispoli Remix) (Tommy Boy), Hannah-Rose Dreaming (Passengerz Club Mix) (Robbins Entertainment), and Gaudino featuring Crystal Waters Destination Unknown (Nari & Gaudino Club Mix) (Robbins Entertainment), a lively club tune, perfect for summer fun.
Latin sensation Thalia has released Dont Look Back (Norty Cotto Club Remix) (Latin/Virgin), a lively dancefloor treasure for any crossover fans. Hed Kandi continues to expand the realm of cool dance tracks with A Higher Place (Gospel degree Vocal Mix) from Peyton (Hed Kandi). Its sort of an unusual track I know, but with a definitive 80s throwback feel this is one to lookout for. Phunk Investigation remixes are becoming a hot commodity and their work on Stella Projects Get Up Stand Up (Phunk Investigation Club Vocal Mix) (Absolutely Records) is no exception. Another gorgeous club cut sure to receive its fair share on turntable spins is Radio Groove Foundations Wednesday Morning (Lemon Club Mix) (Streetlab). Recent DanceStar award winner Star 69 has been reaping the benefits with tracks such as Amukas Appreciate Me (Star 69) keeping the labels name at the top of a number of charts from DJs and media alike.
For those of you looking for a bit of the acid flashback we all have craved at one time or another Airscape Sosei (Johan Gielen Remix) (ID&T) is a scorcher that feels like a Mardi gras parade on acid while tracks like The Beat Goes On (Mike Robbins Remix) (Sunrise) from E-Craig remind us why we need a resurgence of the acid house sound.
Other names sure ot be on the lips of vinyl junkies across the globe are Missy Elliot and Deep Dish. Elliots Pass That Dutch (Scumfrog Remix) (The Gold Mind/Elektra) has received a shine from our amphibious fiend who has done it again for the hip-hop diva who can always be counted on to produce dancefloor gold. Also dont forget to lookout for Deep Dish, who start their first-ever Ibiza residency Yoshitoshi@Pacha this month that will run through September 9. The award-winning duo just finished their highly anticipated sophomore artist album with the first single, Flashdance being touted by everyone from Sasha to Eric Morillo, along with Pete Tong picking it as his Essential New Tune. Busdriver featuring Abstract Rude Unnecessary Thinking
Soon, the whole world will know of Busdriver. The LA Underground veteran with the unique flow, GSOH and continuity announcer diction has released a number of superb albums, both as himself and as part of The Weather. His latest teams him with Daddy Kev and D-Styles for maximum blindingness. Oh, and if that ain't enough, the legendary Abstract Rude's on there, too.

Bigg Jus Kingspitter Burn, Babylon... The former Company Flow man is about the drop the definitive and complete version of his legendary 'Black Mamba Serums' sessions. Recorded over the last four years in and around Atlanta, it's a must for anyone claiming even a passing interest in underground hip hop. "Kingspitter" is one of the newest tracks - a taster of Jus at his illest and most inflammatory.
